LST 50
It might interest you to know that my grandfather Charlie Webber was one of the Home Guard Officers in Salcombe during WW2. Just before LST50 left for the Normandy beaches, one of the crew gave him his pet dog. I subsequently grew up with this mongrel named "Fifty" and I have a photograph of it (somewhere!). I wonder if any of the crew, if they are still alive remember this dog and who its original owner was.
During the same period my great uncle Lt Frances Murch RNVR was the Resident Naval Officer in Salcombe working alongside Commander William H Henszey USNR, Commanding Officer USAAB Salcombe 1943-1945.
I hope this is of interest to somebody!

My father served on this ship for the whole of WWII in communications. Sadly he has passed but i do have many many photos and the ships log while he was onboard, handwritten. Over the holidays i plan on making a few copies and would be happy to send you won. I've also promised to send one to the LST group that has the traveling ship & museum in Indiana. This ship meant the word to my father and stayed in touch with many of his shipmates over the years. Especially the ship's captain, Tru Cummings. Tru was a truely special and good man. Many of the surviving fellows were involved in the LST association and i'd highly recommend connecting with them.
Nice to see someone remembers Dad's ship - so many stories. Thank you

My father, John George Earley, was on LST 50 from 25th March, 1943 to 7th Oct, 1943 as Auxiliary Vessels Gunnery Officer for gunnery duties with senior officer 5th LST Squadron. He was in fact in the Royal Naval Reserve in UK.He was also on LST 410 and LST 322 from 8th Oct, 1943 until 29th June, 1944. Sorry the records do not show when he was on either of them. He was also on HMS Odyssey, HMS Clement and HMS Lanka which found him in Colomo 1945-46 but we do not know which LST's he was on.
We know he was at Salerno, Anzio (beachmaster) and Normandy (beachmaster again).
If anyone has any information as to which ships landed on which beach we would be pleased to hear from you.
